SOX – Semiconductor Index – Technical Analysis

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, SOX, has surged 55% since our early-January call, delivering one of the strongest moves among the major market groups. After a rally of this size, the key question is no longer whether the call worked — it did — but whether the structure still supports the next leg higher.
In this update, we return to the data. We focus on the statistical signals, historical parallels, and technical conditions that may help reconfirm the direction for semiconductors at this critical stage of the rally.
CANDLES

SOX closed the first week of May with bullish candles, which would normally support the case for a continued rally. However, I would be very cautious going forward. The index has entered extreme overbought territory, and an abrupt drop could happen at any moment.
The main reason is the set of signals SOX recorded in April. The index closed the 1M, 2M, and 4M frames well above the standard Bollinger Bands, and even above the 3-standard-deviation bands. This type of behavior is often punished. Readers who follow gold know exactly what I mean, with the annual gold chart below serving as a useful reference.
For SOX, similar technical conditions have appeared only three times since inception. The average drawdown after those events was about 56%. Two of the corrections were relatively quick, lasting 8–12 months, while the 2000 event unfolded over roughly eight years.
At minimum, the overstretched candles suggest a likely return toward at least the upper boundary of the Bollinger Bands, implying a pullback of about 18%, assuming SOX does not advance further before the decline starts. A deeper 36–56% decline should not come as a surprise either.

Elliott Wave
All Time

The Elliott Wave evaluation from January played out very well. The index rallied strongly, and I still treat the current advance as wave 3 of some degree. However, the exact degree has become more questionable after the recent developments, and we need to see a pullback before reassessing the probabilities with more confidence.
So far, several indicators have diverged across different frames, signaling potential proximity to a top. The major alert at this stage is the risk of a reversal, as the current rally appears to be approaching its terminus point, if it has not already reached it.
