Semiconductors: An Election Gift Nobody Asked For?

The Semiconductor Index seems to have developed its own strategy for the U.S. elections. While everyone else is busy debating polls, policy, and who gets credit for what, $SOX may be preparing something considerably more practical: a potential 27–30% decline over the next three weeks. Now that would be quite a gift to the administration just before voters head to the polls — although probably not the kind anyone in Washington would put on a campaign poster.
The timing becomes even more entertaining when we remember that semiconductors account for roughly 30% of Nasdaq. So if the chip complex decides to lose a quarter of its value in a hurry, Nasdaq is unlikely to sit quietly in the corner pretending nothing happened. Semis have been one of the engines of this market. Engines are wonderful things when they are accelerating. When they start coughing, however, passengers usually notice.
And then we come to the candles. How often do you see a Bearish Engulfing on the weekly frame in the middle of an otherwise healthy rally? Right. Either the rally is healthy — or it is sick. The latest weekly development strongly suggests that something underneath the surface has changed, and the Elliott Wave structure is not exactly rushing in to reassure the bulls. The current decline has room to evolve into something substantially larger, with the first serious target zone sitting around 10,025–9,120, and the deeper structure allowing a move toward roughly 7,980. From current levels, that is where the 27–30% discussion comes from.
What makes this setup particularly interesting is that it is not appearing out of nowhere. The long-term purple scenario we discussed several months ago has been sitting quietly in the background, waiting for the shorter-term structure to line up. It now appears either to be unfolding already or very close to doing so. Different time frames are beginning to speak the same language, and when that happens, we tend to listen a little more carefully.
Of course, markets remain perfectly capable of changing the script, and confirmation still matters. But if the semiconductor complex follows the roadmap over the next few weeks, this could become one of those charts we revisit later and say, “Well, the warning was not exactly subtle.” And considering how much weight semiconductors carry inside Nasdaq, the bigger question may not be what happens to $SOX. It may be what happens to everything riding on its shoulders.
